SONIC CITY

99designs CONTEST

Sonic City is a starting boutique manufacturer of guitar effect pedals, electronic yet robust devices/stompboxes for guitarists who dial in their own, individual guitar tone.

With the coming release of their new distortion pedal, Sonic city sought out to hire a graphic designer through a 99designs contest.

“We are searching for an awesome classy designer to create the artwork for our overdrive/distortion pedal called "Gorilla".

The Gorilla delivers classic distortion sounds, ranging from smooth rock tones into wild lead sounds. Regardless of the guitar volume, the Gorilla pedal is always present in a band context, reflecting the room-filling and also the primal alpha status of a silverback.

The design shall be classy, powerful and potentially intimidating, but not just aggressive and provocative.

We think of a simple and iconic design rather than a colorful illustration. Nevertheless, any creative idea is welcome and appreciated.”

Although there were nearly 100 design entries, I was named winner and awarded the opportunity to work with Sonic City to help bring their Gorilla pedal to life.

GUITAR PEDAL ARTWORK

I decided to keep the design simple. I focused on using crude and rudimentary shapes to achieve a sort of “cut-out” look. The intense facial expression of the gorilla gave the design that pseudo-aggressive edge that Sonic City was looking for, while the simplicity of the silhouettes kept it from being too in-your-face.
